Project Exhibit opens at the Wardlaw: Scottish Objects of Encounter

On 6th September, the St Andrews team (Emily and Alexandros) launched a small exhibit at the University’s Wardlaw Museum. Scottish Objects of Encounter applies the questions underlying the ItalianROSE project to iconic Scottish objects. It focuses on two university maces, one from the 15th century, and one from the 21st. In prearing the exhibit, it was fascinating to learn more about the Scottish-European artistic and intellectual connections that shaped the medieval San Salvator Mace, and to interview the Greek silversmiths who brought generations of expertise to the historic Hamilton and Inches workshop that made the Six Centuries Mace. The exhibit highlights the role of craftmanship in both creating and complicating national or regional identities.

Scottish Objects of Encounter will run until the end of 2024.
